The clinical programs located within the Centre are an example of the partnership of Vancouver Coastal Health clinical care and UBC clinical research/trials.

Treating MS and NMO

Since the MS/NMO Clinic’s inception in the 1980s, the clinic continues to adopt a multidisciplinary clinical team approach and works closely with imaging scientists and basic scientists, all searching for new, innovative ways to diagnose and treat MS and NMO. The clinic is a national clinical trial centre for new pharmaceutical therapies, imaging research, advanced genetics and immunology research. It is recognized internationally for its unique and innovative approaches and cares for nearly 90 percent of the MS patients in British Columbia.

Training and education are especially vital components of the MS/NMO Clinic. The clinic is actively involved in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents and fellows who may become future MS specialists.

Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a chronic and unpredictable disease that has a significant impact on individuals as well as family members and friends. The NMO Clinic and Research program operates alongside the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Clinic at the UBC Hospital and is focused on finding the cause and improving the treatment of NMO. It strives to raise ongoing awareness and to educate and disseminate information about NMO to patients, the public and healthcare professionals.
